Mary J. Blige can collaborate with the most popular producers in the world and still emerge with a record that sounds like hers alone. That’s what happened when she teamed up with Dr. Dre on “Family Affair,” her biggest hit. His thundering, ominous sound is still present on that track, but she molds it around her bright, expressive voice to create a buoyant dance anthem (or “danthem,” if you will.)
