This jazz-rock fusion band was almost Best New Artist, but who are they?

Best New Artist was a stacked category at the 1972 Grammys. Carly Simon won, and I can’t argue with that. But if she’d lost to Bill Withers, who was essentially nominated for the song “Ain’t No Sunshine,” I wouldn’t have argued with that either. Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Reynolds would’ve been a quirkier choice, but they had scored a massive hit with “Don’t Pull Your Love.” And Emerson, Lake, and Palmer would’ve been the music nerd’s pick, though at least they’d hit the top 10 with their debut album.
And then there was Chase.
