A few years ago, when electronic dance music was at its cultural peak, there was a lot of online chatter about “the drop.” As in: The archetypal EDM song builds and builds until, finally, the beat drops like a hammer, forcing us to dance. (There’s an especially good example in “We Found Love” by Rihanna and Calvin Harris).
I didn’t know what to call it at the time, but I first got introduced to the drop in 1992, when I fell hard for “Love U More,” the only hit by the British techno group Sunscreem.
